Career awards

The GSAV has established two new awards in 2025 to celebrate early career and mid career geoscientists working in Victoria.

The society also recognises career contributions to Victorian geology with the Selwyn Medal. Please scroll down to see details below for all of these awards and the nomination process for each.

GSAV EARLY CAREER GEOLOGIST AWARD

The GSAV Early Career Geologist Award is a new award in 2025 to  recognise a talented early career geologist who has contributed to  geology via their work and community involvement. The award is open to all geologists in academia, government, industry and working elsewhere in geoscience. This award is aimed at promoting and celebrating diversity and inclusion in the field of Victorian geology and therefore selection criteria will also be based on experience and contributions to diversity. Contributions to geology would not necessarily have to be work on Victorian geology but applicants are encouraged to include Victorian contributions. Recognition by this award is aimed help promote career opportunities for early career geologists, especially in underrepresented population groups.

The award consists of a $3000 cash prize and certificate. The awardee will be expected to do a short talk about their contributions or work in one of the GSAV monthly meetings in the 12 months following the award announcement. The talk length and timing may be arranged with the GSAV committee upon acceptance of the award.

Applications are due by May 30th, 2025

Nominations may be submitted on behalf of a candidate or candidates may self nominate

Applications must be emailed to [email protected] with all documents attached, and with the subject line "Application for GSAV Early Career Geologist Award" 


 
Eligibility criteria
  • Open to all geologists working in academia, government, industry and elsewhere in Victoria
  • Can apply up to 10 years post-PhD, or up to 10 years industry experience after highest degree (career interruptions taken into account).
  • Must be a GSA member upon acceptance of the award (if not already)
 
Application
Please include:
  • The name and email address of the candidate
  • The name and email address of two people who support the nomination (who will only be contacted to confirm their support if the candidate is shortlisted).
  • Candidate's CV (2 page maximum, including education, career and recognition, experience with diversity. If relevant, please include up to 5 best published works.)
  • If relevant, please include a short statement on career interruptions (including estimate of time lost)
  • Short (1 page maximum) summary statement  on the candidates:
    • Contributions to geology (emphasizing Victorian geology)
    • Community involvement in geology (e.g. outreach, teaching, service, experience and/or commitment to improving diversity)
 
Award selection criteria
Selection will be based on how applications address these three criteria in equal measure:
  • Contributions to geology (with preference given to Victorian geology)
  • Community involvement (outreach, teaching, service etc., can be within geology or otherwise)
  • Experience and contributions to diversity

Selwyn Medal
​SELWYN MEDAL
The Selwyn Medal is named in honour of Sir Alfred Selwyn, the eminent Victorian pioneering geologist and founder of the Geological Survey of Victoria. It is awarded, usually yearly, to recognise significant ongoing or former contributions of high calibre to any field of Victorian geology.

Nominations for the Selwyn Medal are due by May 30th, 2025

Nominations must be emailed to [email protected] with all documents attached, and with the subject line "Nomination for Selwyn Medal" 


To nominate a candidate, please supply two separate letters of nomination for the candidate (usually 1-2 pages in length), detailing their career contributions to Victorian geology (
including but not limited to their work, community involvement, teaching, service, experience and contributions to diversity and inclusion.) These letters may be written by more than one nominator and more than 2 letters may be included.

​Self nominations are not accepted.
